Out and About

Places of interest in the Bournemouth area

With seven miles of golden sand, Bournemouth welcomes couples, families, old and young. The beach offers a flat and easy promenade walk or if you prefer bike hire, stretching the length of the coast from Sandbanks at one end to Hengistbury Head at the other. There are a selection of beach side cafes and restaurants, and safe sea bathing for younger visitors. Southbourne where our unit is located is on this stretch and can be found half way between Bournemouth pier and Hengistbury Head.

Coastline Walk

Walk, jog or bike taking in the fantastic panoramic views. Stay on the promenade or detour and take the coast cliff path enjoying the Boscombe Chine Gardens. These gardens offer a lovely mix of scenery and activities with formal flower beds, large grassy areas for recreation, mini golf and a water-themed playground. A walk, as short or long as you fancy.

Grade II listed Victorian Gardens
These are accessed via a short walk from Bournemouth Pier and offer a comfortable almost level walk suitable for wheelchairs/mobility scooters through landscaped gardens. If you continue the walk from the Lower Gardens to Central Gardens you pass public tennis courts, the war memorial and tree trail. As you go into the Upper gardens there is a selection of street art. (There is a fairly steep slope as you enter the upper gardens). If you continue to the end you cross the Bournemouth boundary into Poole and finish at Coy Pond. There is a resident duck population and several benches around the pond where travellers can rest their feet, a little haven from the main tourist traffic.

Hengistbury Head Nature Reserve
Hengistbury Head is a dramatic headland in Bournemouth situated to the south of Christchurch Harbour. It is an outstanding site for wildlife and archaeology and offers beautiful beaches and views across the New Forest, Isle of Wight and Purbecks. There is plenty to discover and explore using the Hengistbury land train or take the paths and trails, by foot or by bike. The Visitor Centre stocks maps and tips on what to look out for on your walk.

Christchurch – Tuckton Tea Gardens, Riverlands and Christchurch Harbour

Tuckton Tea Gardens can be found just past Tuckton library by the River Stour (there is a pay and display car park here). The area round here is made up of meadowland and smaller wooded areas. There is a foot path close to the Captains Club Hotel that takes you to Christchurch Quay. The castle ruins and Christchurch priory are worth a visit.

JUST A THOUGHT

Many local coach firms do trips to Bournemouth in the Spring and Autumn at very competitiverates. The two big providers are Shearings www.shearings.com/destinations/bournemouth and Daish www.daishs.com/holidays/coach-inclusive but be on the lookout for smaller local firms if you fancy a mini- break with no travel worries. Bournemouth is ideal for groups so why not get together with fellow patients and organise your own trip!

This was my first holiday dialysis and I was a little apprehensive before I went- however I found a very warm welcome from Geraldine and Kish, the supervising and very professional dialysis male nurse.

The centre, near a fine beach along from Bournemouth, is small but well laid out and has a homely feel which is very relaxing. Kish had all my records and knew exactly what was required, he gave me attention throughout and I felt very much at ease.

Tea and biscuits anytime and full attention all the time!

I would thoroughly recommend this to any dialysis patient looking to have holiday treatment.

I have just returned from a Holiday visit to KC dialysis in the newly fitted facility which is first class. As a long term user of Chris and Geraldine`s family run Dialysis centre I can honestly say that you will not find a more professional and friendly team anywhere. I have received holiday dialysis all over Europe and I keep returning to KC where the team’s experience and professionalism is a shining example. Whether like me your an old hand or this is your first time holiday dialysis, Chris and Geraldine as nurses will do everything possible to ensure you have a good holiday and your dialysis will be comfortably managed in friendly surroundings.

I recently had a week’s holiday in Bournemouth and had my dialysis treatment here.

Booking via email was easy, Raj was happy to answer any queries and sent all the paperwork for my unit to complete.

The centre itself is near the beach and easy to find. The machines are all Fresenius; I just supplied my own Heparin etc.Everywhere was spotlessly clean and to the high standard you would expect.

A family run unit; the staff were all lovely and highly professional. I had no worries whatsoever about my care whilst on dialysis and was even offered coffee and toast!

I would definitely go back and have no hesitation in recommending KC Dialysis Centre for worry- free treatment during your holiday.
